The Other Matt Roth The Photographer

So, yeah... there's another photographer named Matt Roth out there. Professionally, he goes by Matthew Aaron Roth, but to all his friends he's Matt Roth. Luckily we shoot different subjects. I'm more of a portrait guy, and he's an "adventure" photographer.

Bill Lightfoot for AARP Bulletin

Retired Richmond police officer Bill Lightfoot, photographed at his Richmond home, ended his 36-year career in law enforcement with the elder abuse unit, much of which was dominated by financial abuse. He was a homicide detective for nine years before that, but says he was more astonished by the circumstances surrounding the victims he encountered. More often than not, the abusers were immediate family members and/or primary care givers. After retirement Lightfoot is glad to have left the casework, but not the subject. Seven years after retiring his shield he continues his work through outreach and helps craft laws concerning elder abuse in the Richmond General Assembly.

Laurel Snyder, Author

Laurel Snyder is a successful children's author who grew up in Catonsville. While she enjoys the success received writing "picture books," she admits being a poet at heart. She is photographed Thursday, October 1, 2009 on on the terrace at her mother's house outside where she would brood as a teenager. Her life in Catonsville as an "angry," but smart high school student shaped the somewhat dark, yet thoughtful stories she would write for children and adults. These days the 37-year-old writer lives with her husband and two young sons in Atlanta.

Tenney Mason, former Director of Photography for the Patuxent Publishing Co.

Caught in a flurry of Tribune Company buy-outs, Director of Photography for the Patuxent Publishing Co., Tenney Mason, has left his post of more than 25 years in early June, 2007. This photo was taken by staff photographer, Matt Roth in November, 2005, after Mason asked Roth for a few photos he could use for his match.com profile. This shot wasn't used, however. It was too moody, and wasn't representative of his personality. He was a loud, little man, a big-time-smiler, and he often kept his employees from getting to assignments on time with long, animated stories. "Oh, just one more thing..." is how they started. Mason was a sucker for the graphic photos. His credo was "a photo's gotta hit you like a pie in the face!" The man had fire in his belly. He loved arguing for his department. "I told myself a long time ago, if it's not fun, I'm not doing it." But when the Tribune company set out to eliminate one of the two administrative positions in the Patuxent photo department, he realized his position would become more work than worth. So he took the buy out...The one thing he says he'll miss the most is putting up the photos of the week every Friday. His life's work was making Patuxent an institution for photojournalism, and that weekly trip to the cork boards outside the photo department was a constant reminder of his job well done.
