The Ghost Snow Cat of My Backyard
I wanted to make a time lapse video of the snow piling up in my backyard (don’t judge me) and look who wanted to be in it? Keep posted for the time lapse video AND for more photos of the neighborhood alley cats. God! I sound like such a lame-o! time lapse…? cat photos…? Whatever. That [...]
My Best “Runts” of 2010 pt. 3
Why oh why do I love this picture? Everything about this shoot makes me roll my eyes. First of all, I’m breaking one of my cardinal rules! I HATE HATE HATE making portraits of people holding books, or whatever it is the writer decides the story is also about. So, I don’t do it. If [...]
My Best “Runts” of 2010 pt. 2
The world is funny, isn’t it? Or at lest that how it seems to me. …but then again, I’m the guy who laughs too much during movies. This is the second installment of my Best Runts of 2010. The first is here. Can I first start by saying I can’t stand lifestyle images. You know what [...]
What do you do with a sabotaged assignment?
Draw a mustache! Maia Krapcho, from Columbia, first learned baking at vo-tech school. While she has since moved on to a different career, she finds cake-baking to be a creative outlet. She is photographed in her home kitchen Monday, September 20, 2010. Here’s the Howard County Times’ Go! story. She makes crazy cakes — for [...]
Grant & Marie Are Getting Married
Grant and Marie are getting married! Believe it or not, but this was shot in a Gaithersburg, MD subdivision — not on a magical hillside. I really didn’t want to make the traditional “updated prom photo” pose, as my girlfriend Jess calls it. Of course I made the safe shots. …we also called them “grandparent” [...]
Shawna, Brooks and their fat effin cat
The following are photos of Shawna Potter, Brooks Harlan and their fat cat Chaos at Big Crunch Amp and Guitar Repair. There’s a common conception that photo shoots are either all work-generated or for the whims of vein people. And to those people I ask: WHAT ABOUT THE FUN OF IT? Some of the photos [...]
Spring Preview Outtake
In my most recent Spring Preview portrait post, I might have made it seem like the studio is not a fun place. but… …as you can see, if you give a hula hoop to some people and fun can’t not be had.
Outtake: sign of a strong friendship
While I was testing my lights/figureing out which wrestling move to showcase, Bubba Mullens’s foot wound up in Mark Colabucci’s nostril. Mark was pissed. rightfully so. I was worried the mood on “set” was going to be testy and short. But these guys have wrestled and been friends for a long long time. Bubba — [...]
10am Update: Little Frog in Some Science Fog
Mixing liquid nitrogen with boiling soapy water creates an intense, but harmless explosion. A scenic foggy calm ensues, which George Boyer, age 7, is seen playing in. The liquid nitrogen demonstration was part of Johns Hopkins University’s 2nd annual Physics Fair Saturday April 30, 2005, hosted at the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. This [...]
The Key in my Key Lighting is…
Right here… awww. c’mon. why aren’t you laughing? I made this little pun while prepping for a shoot involving several thousand dollars (5 figures!) worth of gems and jewelry yesterday.
10am Update: Al Paglione from EAW
Al Paglione takes reprise from cooking during the 2006 Eddie Adams Workshop to chomp on a Cuban cigar…This is Al Paglione. He and his son help cook at the Eddie Adams Workshop. Meeting him was pretty great! I was shooting him with my 17-55mm and he was totally jockin’ me about my zoom. He was [...]
10am Update: Sometimes you just gotta shoot it.
Saturday, September 26, 2009. My assignment was to shoot the football game. But this kid was too cool to ignore. The 10am Update is a regular feature showcasing some of the best images from my archive.
Creepy light test
I was building my lighting set up for a recent shoot and it resulted in a really cool, dark, creepy image. The best thing about it, is that it gave me lighting ideas for my upcoming Athletes of the Year shoots. Sunmee Huh is lit with two gridded alien bees to her right and left.
10am Update: The 7-Eleven Foxes
A fox family member sits by the Owings Mills 7-Eleven it frequents on a regular basis I made these images back in 2004, when I was an intern at the Patuxent Publishing Co. I was filling up my car with gas after an assignment, and I looked over and saw a fox. I looked around [...]
Under the light
Reservoir’s David Kuper, bottom, lost to River Hill’s Evan Shebel 11-2 during the 140 weight match. Reservoir defeated guest River Hill 42-16 Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Here’s the Howard County Times story. Lesson learned: when the winning team is depicted by one of the kids who lost their match, there’s a good chance the sports [...]
10am Update: I heart snow.
This is from December, 2008. Jess drew the heart, and our upstairs neighbor’s dog, Josh, was looking to make some yellow snow. I just got my new full-frame D700 and I was making as many night photos as possible. The drawback — which doesn’t really bother me in this image — is that all my [...]
