Outtake: sign of a strong friendship
While I was testing my lights/figureing out which wrestling move to showcase, Bubba Mullens’s foot wound up in Mark Colabucci’s nostril. Mark was pissed. rightfully so. I was worried the mood on “set” was going to be testy and short. But these guys have wrestled and been friends for a long long time. Bubba — [...]
For AARP Bulletin: NJ Taxes and the case of Corinne Bell
Below are photos I recently made for an AARP Bulletin story about how New Jersey’s high property taxes effect seniors on fixed incomes. Corinne Bell, partially obscured by artificial flowers on her kitchen table, has lived in the home she and her husband built for 52 years. The widow now lives with three cats, Tiny, Cece, [...]
For the NYTimes, The House That Built Ruth: Gibbons High’s Last Year
I recently shot for a New York Times article discussing the impending demise of Babe Ruth’s high school baseball field. Below are a bunch of photos that didn’t get published. Mike Hoos’s job as the Cardinal Gibbons Admissions Director has faded away, “because
The Key in my Key Lighting is…
Right here… awww. c’mon. why aren’t you laughing? I made this little pun while prepping for a shoot involving several thousand dollars (5 figures!) worth of gems and jewelry yesterday.
10am Update: Sometimes you just gotta shoot it.
Saturday, September 26, 2009. My assignment was to shoot the football game. But this kid was too cool to ignore. The 10am Update is a regular feature showcasing some of the best images from my archive.
Creepy light test
I was building my lighting set up for a recent shoot and it resulted in a really cool, dark, creepy image. The best thing about it, is that it gave me lighting ideas for my upcoming Athletes of the Year shoots. Sunmee Huh is lit with two gridded alien bees to her right and left.
Under the light
Reservoir’s David Kuper, bottom, lost to River Hill’s Evan Shebel 11-2 during the 140 weight match. Reservoir defeated guest River Hill 42-16 Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Here’s the Howard County Times story. Lesson learned: when the winning team is depicted by one of the kids who lost their match, there’s a good chance the sports [...]
10am Update: Curtsy
The Catonsville Historical Society celebrated this year’s Founder’s Day by historically re-enacting Catonsville during the Civil War at the Townsend House Saturday September 25, 2004. Back in September, 2004, when I shot this, I remember getting peeved at the little girl in the middle for breaking the third wall. All these perfect active layers were [...]
10am Update: Compassion for an Opponent
I love this photo. To this day I kick myself for not getting their names. The Milford Mills wrestler, foreground, is all tore up after losing the 160 weight match against the Hereford wrestler in the background. This is all taking place during the Baltimore County championship meet Saturday February 23, 2008 at Parkville High [...]
10am Update: Hat and Gun
The Almshouse in Cockeysville held ground for some Civil War reenactors, Saturday afternoon April 21, 2007. According to Civil War reenactor Ralph Aitkin, from Lewistown, PA, during the Civil War times, embalmers, were members of the upper class and doctors, by trade. They brandished fancy pistols to ward off thievery, and wore expensive hats to [...]
Test Shot
If no one else is around, this is how I sometimes test out my lighting set up. Truth be told, I had a fun Maryland Family shoot article about old wives tales, specifically about how childrens’ faces are threatened to “stick.”
Just to be on the safe side.
On a lunch table during Manchester Valley High School’s “Maverick Stampede” Wednesday September, 2 2009. The stampede was a 5K run. The School hosted an open house and a school-spirit rally, where the players were honored and the marching band unveiled the MVHS’s fight song.

Light the Emotion!
Ben Bender linked to an article on Emotional Lighting when he commented on my recent post, Shoot the Emotion! So, since I love to use lighting, I think it’s worth discussing. Now, this may not be the best photo to describe emotional lighting, buuuut, it’s by far the most convenient. I shot it Saturday. I [...]
