I rode “bitch” on Kristen’s new motorcycle, a Honda Passport C70, to Robert E. Lee Park in Baltimore Friday, April 20, 2012.

Yeah, I know. I know. It looks like a scooter, but it has gears. So, technically, it’s a motorcycle. She humorously calls it her “Hog,” but I think calling it a “piglett” is a bit more appropriate.

Yikes! The Piglett stalled on Roland Ave.Kristen got it working …with a little help from my memory of operating my grandaddy’s riding lawnmower.

This Geekfest post is, by far, the MOST energetic. Up top, we got luchadores throwing hadouken blasts. Below, there’s evidence of the infamous Kevin Martin prank… and other crazy stuff!

Earlier in the day, there was a 5k race featuring lederhosen clad runners…

Bettina Hansen organized this year’s print auction which benefitted the Chris Hondros Fund. The cash total was $666. ha! and so Melissa Lyttle grabbed a handful of bills and decided to put it in a safe place. hehehe.

Geekfesters descended on the Beauty Bar and shot the shit out of a Luchadore match.

Yeah. I know. What in the world is going on here?

This, my friends, is the friggin’ Kansas City Airport. ugh. This poor guy was watching the terminal from the hallway for who knows what reason? I don’t know why the rules are the way they are there, but I know they’re even more obtuse and ridiculous than any airport I’ve been to.

For example, I asked Monica if she wanted something from Starbucks. “Sure,” she said. I should’ve suspected something was off when I noticed that TSA worker guarding the door out of this tiny, weird, one-bathroom terminal. Seriously, Monica told me the ladies’ room had two toilets for, what…? at least six plane-fulls of people? ridiculous!

So, I asked the TSA lady — the brunt of everyone’s frustrations, I’m sure (poor gal) — how I should go about getting some coffee and Monica’s chai? Well, first things first. I need to bring my my ID and boarding pass because I’d have to go BACK THRU SECURITY. On top of that, I couldn’t bring any outside food or beverages into the terminal. So, I’d have to finish it outside. So, there’s no bringing chai back to Monica. She told me my choices were to get coffee from the Quiznos to my right, or pay too much over at the Wolfgang Puck stand next to it. I’m sorry, but if I’m gonna spend too much money on airport coffee it might as well be from Starbucks.

…what? am I  wrong?

As usual, Geekfest doesn’t disappoint. This is the first one I’ve been to that wasn’t in St. Petersburg, FL.

What’s APAD? Geeze! you guys have so many questions. APAD = A Photo A Day. It’s a listserve community of photographers. But to the outside world, it looks like this. (psst! hey you. yeah the one who’s confused. click on “this.”)

…and I gotta be honest. if Baltimore starts hating me, I’m moving to Denver! My hair didn’t get too big. The restaurant service was amazing. The food was even better! mmm. Breakfast pot pie at Snooze! Apparently I’m not that prone to altitude sickness, either. The one drawback? …I had SO many boogers! That’s how dry the air is up there. But I guess that also means less allergies.

Maybe I am a mountain man, after all? …an urban mountain man, of course. I can’t get too too grizzly.

So, for the next few posts I decided to lump the photos together based on mood, rather than on strict chronology. …but, for the most part they’re linear.

So, These are my “quiet” photos from Geekfest.

Ben O’Brian, dropping Monica & me off at BWI,  Thursday, September 15, 2011.  BWITodd Spoth, our other traveling companion. …does anyone else think it’s weird that I’m using the words “companion”? and “mate”? sometimes bathrooms can be pretty, too, y’know.I know I already made a post about this photo, but I really like it. So try to enjoy it twice. …cool? cool!Ben has, probably, the coolest office I’ve ever seen. See that nook Monica’s nestled in? It’s part of his office! I’d get so much work done in that office because I’d never wanna leave. Maybe that’s part of the reason why he was a Geekfest speaker, this year…? Monica got to sleep on the couch with a sheepskin blanket. I got to sleep with… I mean next to Todd. And Todd had to deal with my mouth breathing. (I don’t snore!)Abby taking a break from Law School to laugh at stuff. She’s hilarious! Sol Neelman gathers himself (and puts himself together) behind the screen before Melissa Lyttle’s introduction was so touching it made him cry. I’ve never seen a luchador cry before. …but then again, I don’t watch that much Spanish Speaking TV. I’m sure it happens.

I like to think that the lack of focus in this photos is appropriate because Sol is actively gathering focus in this moment, but he doesn’t quite have it all there yet.

Yeah. It was intentional.

Oh, and Sol has a friggin’ book out too! Weird Sports He launched that sucka’ at Geekfest. Which is appropriate because he credits Geekfest Austin with putting his head on straight. …and by head I mean his luchador mask.

Instead of an after dinner mint, our amazing Red Lulu (heads up, their website has audio) waiter brought out a gigantic puff ball of cotton candy!!! …so we did what any civilized person would do — COTTON CANDY FACIAL HAIR!

Why oh why do I love this picture?

Everything about this shoot makes me roll my eyes. First of all, I’m breaking one of my cardinal rules! I HATE HATE HATE making portraits of people holding books, or whatever it is the writer decides the story is also about. So, I don’t do it. If I can make a book or a photograph, or whatever the subject made into a detail photo, that’s what I’m gonna do. — especially with authors. It’ll probably help the layout, and add an extra “click” to the website. This woman, however, is a faux finisher. Rita Melnick’s is a featured artists in the resource book “Modelo by Design, Volume 2,” — which is what she’s holding — and that’s pretty much what the article was about. Ugh! This newspaper article reads like a website bio. I could talk at length about how this assignment isn’t really journalism, but I think y’all are smart enough to figure that out.

So, why in the world do I love this image? Well, on the one sense, Rita was super pleasant to deal with, and got what I was going for. She was up for anything. …and why wouldn’t she be? We’re giving her faux finishing business free advertising! But this image (not unlike the article) is just ridiculous, isn’t it? I could try to make a heady analogy about faux paint/fake news/faked enthusiasm blah blah blah.

…but the fact is, every time I look at it I chuckle.

I get something out of it.

And hopefully the readers do too.

Charlie Shoemaker is leaving for Africa later this week. So, he threw a party — and, possibly drank 13 beers. This is him the following morning.

The impressive thing about his trip is that he’s actually going. There are a ton of photographers out there who say they want to go to Africa, but he actually followed through. Good stuff, bud. Good stuff.
