I’ve been really digging your series of photographs of high school athletes. Inspiring work to photogs like me just starting out. Thanks so much for posting your pictures — and for not stripping out the EXIF info!

I have one simple question regarding your lighting kit on these shoots. I see you’re stopping waaay down to kill the ambient light and stay under your sync speed. Are you using speedlights or strobes? I’m itching to try some similar shots outdoors, but I suspect my poor little speedlights won’t have the oomph to come through at f/22+.

    Keep up the great work,

    Josh

    Hey thanks Josh!

I’m using the “big lights.” A mix of Alien Bee 1600 & 800′s and a White Lightning 800. I might’ve used my sb-800 on a few of the shots, too.
But don’t discount your speedlights just yet. The small lights can yield some nice results. Check out my recent softball post:

If you don’t know what high speed sync focal plane mode is, do yourself a favor and look into it.
It certainly has its limitations, but then again, so do the big lights.
And, depending on which speedlight(s) you own, you can definitely overpower the sun. It just might not be high noon sun in the summer. …well, maybe at f/32.
let me know if you have any more questions.

    Thanks for your response!

Yes, I’m familiar with high-speed sync, but unfortunately none of my speedlights support it. I hope to be able to start bringing in enough money from shooting to justify the outlay for some SB-800s. For now I’ll stick to trying these techniques closer to dusk.
