Ten-year-old Jacob Smith, from Arbutus, keeps a steady lead on Dragon Hornatko, 8, also from Arbutus during a race in the annual fourth of July Arbutus Soapbox Derby. Smith’s 32-year-old car was raced by his father. The race almost didn’t happen, according to Allan Arca, 51, son of the race’s long-time coordinator Paul Arca who has been in and out of the hospital with failing kidneys recently. The senior Arca’s attention to his health has taken his time away from prepping for the derby. The Arca family is asking that someone step-up to take over the derby for 2010. Only five cars showed up to race at the intersection of Elm and Oakland.

Sam Ulsch, 11, from Clarkesville, hops out of his soapbox derby after his first race of the day.
