Shooting food reviews can be fun. If the cook/manager/owner is too controlling the experience usually takes a nose dive. As a result, so does the photo of their food. The Diamondback, however, was very hands off. really nice people, too.
Shooting food reviews can also be boring. …and a bit of a challenge. So, like any good pro photog, I experiment.
Okay, so this photo makes the sandwich look kinda groos — and in the words of fellow Patuxent Staffer, Drew Anthony Smith, “veiny.”
Texture can make a photo really cool — and while I think the texture of the Thanksgiving Between The Bread sandwich is COOL, f/22 doesn’t make the sandwich look too apetizing. The other photos I turned in will most probably run — and they make the sandwich, in my opinion, look tasty. This one made the Howard Magazine designer almost Ralph. hahahahaha. she’s so sensitive.

Located in the old Tiber River Tavern building, The Diamondback is a restaurant with the recession in mind. They specialize in comfort food and no menu item exceeds $18. Pictured is the Thanksgiving Between The Bread sandwich, featuring smoked turkey breast, sage Andouille stuffing, cranberry sauce inside an Italian loaf and smothered with gravy. Garlic mashed potatoes and gravy come on the side.
I love photographing food! It is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. The subject (food) is pretty understanding and patient but making it look as good as it tastes is always the challenge. Unfortunately often the same “formula” for shooting food usually is a good starting place. High key background and soft front light. If you get caught up w/ a lot of food stuff a great place to look is http://foodporndaily.com/ (SFW)
