River Hill’s Michael Campanero has amassed some of the best offensive stats in Maryland High School history, with 88 career touchdowns — 29 from 2008, alone — and almost 7,500 all purpose yards. Wilde Lake’s Danny March, standing 5-foot-8, proved to be a defensive tour-de-force with 87 solo tackles (118 total) and seven interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. The defensive back rarely gets sideline time, working as the team’s quarterback and a punt returner. The 2008 Howard County defensive football player of the year can also dunk a basketball. River Hill’s setter Becky Paynter is the lone senior on the Hawk’s volleyball team. Aside from amassing 518 assists, she also led her team with 70 aces and missed only 12 of 271 serves. Atholton long distance runner Graham Bazell is the 2008 boys cross country player of the year. The state champion cross country runner also broke the time records for the prestigious Bull Run Invitational and the Howard County championship, with 15:51 and 15:58, respectively. Glenelg’s Lauriann Parker leaves her four year career as the school’s all-time leading scorer in all categories with 50 goals, 42 assists, and 142 points. She led the county with 24 assists, more than double of any other player in the county and racked-up 19 goals.
